Living in Northern Ireland
It is the second tallest church in Lincolnshire after St James’ Church in Louth. From October 1974 the church was permanently floodlit at night. The tea room has a nostalgic 1940s feel, with the interior walls hung with old poster art and newspaper clippings dating to pre-war days. A large vintage cabinet is laden with elegant china teapots, cups and saucers. While the Blue Pig is very much a local pub, it’s also a friendly one. Drop in here for a pint and soak up the atmosphere for a while. Kings Walk Cafe is a fabulous little independent eatery along a little alleyway in the middle of Grantham.

In Grantham is a very handsome parish church and probably the first building to come into sight as you approach by train on the London to Edinburgh mainline. Its slender steeple has been described as the finest in England, it is certainly its sixth highest at 282 and a half feet. Inside and out there is a whole gallery of carved heads, some grotesques, some animals, even a hippopotamus to find.
In the 1960s and earlier it produced the Melton Journal and Rutland Journal, both versions of the main paper. The Priory Ruskin Academy (formerly Central Technology & Sports College) is a co-educational school sited near Manthorpe, this school is part of the wider Priory Federation, which has multiple schools in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. The Priory Ruskin Academy has a sixth form which open in 2013 at the old Church High School site. In 1968 Reads of Liverpool built a canning factory in Springfield Road to serve Melton Mowbray, becoming American Can, then Pechiney (French) in 1988, then Impress (Dutch). It closed in 2006 and was demolished in 2007 to make way for a housing estate.

Resting atop a ridge, this beautiful property evolved from a fortified castle, and became a palatial home in the Tudor period, built by the 1st Duke of Suffolk, a close ally of Henry VIII. A lot of that building survives today, but the early-18th-century Baroque facade is by Sir John Vanbrugh and stands as his last major project. If you have a taste for splendid country houses you’re in for a treat at Grantham as the town is surrounded by noble piles built from local Ancaster limestone, many welcoming visitors in summer.
Ulster Campuses
Sports facilities include a multi-purpose sports hall, fitness suite and studio as well as a grass and floodlit synthetic 3G pitch with a pavilion and changing facilities. Ulster University’s Coleraine campus is on the banks of the River Bann with views to the North Coast and County Donegal hills. Subjects taught at Coleraine include biomedical sciences, environmental science and geography, pharmacy, psychology, the humanities, film and journalism, travel and tourism as well as teacher training.
In the 17th century, the wool industry shifted to Yorkshire. However, Grantham continued to be an important and prosperous market town. In the early 18th century visitors were impressed by its size and wealth. As well as the parish church in the Middle Ages there were also friars in Grantham. In the Middle Ages, friars were like monks but instead of withdrawing from the world, they went out to preach.
